gestalt • /gɘ'ʄtælt/
noun (C usually singular)
Something such as a structure or experience that, when considered as a whole, has qualities that are more than the total of all its parts. - Cambridge Dictionary
The uninteresting sometimes becomes fascinating when closely examined. Through photographs I made between 2013 and 2018, I studied the relationship between form and meaning. For me, this series is a visual pleasure that is about the continuous discovery of structural and geometrical order. It is about the creation of such relations that have not existed before. I try to make interesting pictures of seemingly nondescript objects, make something exciting of the boring, something unique of the everyday. I simplify chaos by giving it a structure. With the Gestalt series, I find meaning in the process itself. I instinctively photograph space in a sort of directed improvisation that is a more intuitive and less preconceptualized method than portraiture. Through this process I try to elevate my subject to another level, while emphasizing that the act of photography is an active, and not impartial, gesture.
